US Congressman. He moved to Tennessee, in about 1838, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Charlotte. In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses, serving until 1849. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he moved to New York City and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 46.
