US Congressman. Educated at Guilford Academy, he engaged in mercantile pursuits in New Haven, Connecticut, (1829-42) and then moved to New York City. There he continued in the mercantile business and was vice president of the New York City Chamber of Commerce, (1867-69). In 1874, he was elected as an Independent Republican to the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Stewart L. Woodford, was reelected to the Forty-fourth Congress and as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he retired from public life.
