Senator
President Pro Tempore 1984-1988
SC Senate 1943-1988
SC House of Representatives 1939-1942
----------------------------------
Rembert Dennis, the last of a generation of giants who ruled South Carolina from the Senate, died Saturday at his home. He was 76.

A protege of the late Sens. Marion Gressette and Edgar Brown, Dennis served 50 years in the General Assembly, rising to the posts of Senate Finance chairman and president pro tempore before retiring in 1988 because of declining health. The cause of his death wasn't known Saturday.

He strongly supported the Education Improvement Act and the Education Finance Act, which for the first time signaled a commitment to improving education for all children.

He also counted among his proudest accomplishments legislation creating the farm-to-market road system and providing state surplus funds for local schools rather than spending them to run the government.

There was also an entertaining side. An avid outdoorsman and chief supporter of the state Wildlife and Marine Resources Commission, he opened the 1977 session of the Senate by demonstrating the mating calls of wild turkeys.

Born in 1915 in Pinopolis, Dennis was a son of the late Sen. Edward J. Sr. and Ella Mae Coney Dennis. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1938 and moved to the Senate in 1943, taking over the seat held by his father and grandfather since 1894. It was his father's 1930 murder that convinced him to enter politics.

Services for Dennis will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church in Moncks Corner. Burial will be at St. John's Baptist Church Cemetery in Pinopolis.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Dial-Murray Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife, Natalie Brown Dennis; daughters Dorn Dennis Jordan and Beatrice Markley Dennis, both of Columbia; sons Rembert C. Dennis Jr. of Lewisfield Plantation, E.J. Dennis of Lewisfield Plantation and Columbia, and Luke Tindal Dennis of Lewisfield Plantation; a sister, Beatrice D. Plyer of Greenville; a brother, R. Markley Dennis Sr. of Pinopolis; and 10 grandchildren.
