US Congressman. After graduating from Washington (now Trinity College) in Hartford, Connecticut, he studied law and was admitted to the North Carolina bar. He owned and operated shipyards and engaged in the shipping business. He served as colonel of a North Carolina regiment during the Mexican War and was War Governor of Monterrey, Mexico, in 1846. After the war he was a member of the Mexican Claims Commission. In 1854 he was elected to Congress from North Carolina as the candidate of the American Party, where he served a single term, from 1855 to 1857. He moved to Texas in 1860, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death in Galveston.
