His death may have been a suicide. The Berks & Schuylkill Journal of Reading, Pennsylvania, issue of Saturday, January 16, 1858, page 2, bottom of 4th column reads: "Suicide-David Gross, a young unmarried man, about 25 years of age, who resided in Pike Township committed suicide by cutting his throat on Saturday last. He had for some time been laboring under aberration of mind." This would place his date of death as 9 January, rather than 2 January, but both are Saturdays and there may be a misunderstanding in interpreting the information
