Thomas Allen was born in Pennsylvania to Isaac or William Isaac Allen and Elizabeth Rush Allen.

Thomas was a a corporal from Coshocton County in the War of 1812. He was listed twice in the Ohio Roll along with his brothers, David and Moses.

Thomas arrived in Spencer, Owen County in 1818. He met and married Rachel Hart whose family was the first one in the county. She was the daughter of Philip and Susan Hart. Philip purchased his land September 27, 1816. He donated 10 acres of choice land to help form the city of Spencer. Philip was the first person to inhabit the city and even the county.

The wedding of Rachel Hart and Thomas Allen was the first wedding in Owen County. It was a double wedding with her sister, Elizabeth and James Bigger. This was in the jurisdiction of Knox County at that time and the license was obtained in Vincennes.

Thomas is mentioned frequently in the early history of Spencer and Lancaster where he helped lay out the town.
For the years of 1822 to 1826 and the years of 1835 and 1836, Thomas was the sheriff of Owen County. Between these two time periods, Thomas was County Commissioner. In 1830, he was given funds to establish a Public Asylum. He purchased the land for $108 .and established the first county poor farm. In 1846, his son-in-law was listed as "Keeper of the Poor".

Thomas Allen and Rachel Hart had 3 children:
Elizabeth, 1819; Susannah, 1821; and Philip, 1824.
Rachel passed away in 1824 and on December 18, 1825, the father of 3 very young children, married Nancy Woodsmall. They added Sarah and Lydia to their family.

Thomas became Probate Judge for Owen County and also Justice of the Peace for many years. He married many members of the Hart family.

He died in 1843 and was buried in Santa Fe, IN and later moved here.

Moved to Owen Co., Ind. in 1818; married first wife there that same year. They had 3 children: Elizabeth, Susannah, and Phillip. Wife died in 1824. Married second wife on Dec. 18, 1825 in Owen Co. They had 2 daughters, Sarah and Lydia.

[Note: burial ground is also known as the Allen Asher graveyard. It is five miles north of Gosport.]
