Funeral services for James "Jim" Earl Jones of Fordland were held Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the Fordland High School gymnasium with an estimated crowd of nearly 1,000 present. Burial followed in the Mount Olive Cemetery near Rogersville, under the direction of the Preston-Marsh Funeral Home of Rogersville.
Mr. Jones, 50, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at his home.
He was born June 26, 1952, to James Earl and Della Williams Jones.
A 1970 graduate of Marshfield High School, he then served in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed most of the time in Grand Forks, N.D.
He was married in 1974 to Donna Jean Orr, who preceded him in death. He later found happiness in marriage to Kathy Elaine Lowe, and with her he received two boys, Thomas and Matthew, who he took immense pride in, and also a daughter, Heather, who became his shadow.
He was employed by the Missouri Veterans' Cemetery, Springfield, and he worked until his death for the city of Fordland.
Many knew Jones for his contributions to the community via public service.
For many years, he was the driving force behind the "Mighty Mites" program in Fordland. As an auctioneer, his voice was familiar at benefits and fund-raisers of all kinds and sizes, which he was ever ready to assist in. Each Halloween, a big, furry ape embodied his lighter side and gave him some of his happiest moments.
He also could be seen in a costume of red and white, spreading the good cheer of Christmas.
He also was serving as president of the Cave Springs Homecoming.
In December 1977, he became a member of the Mount Olive Loadge No. 439, where he served as worshipful master in 1984 and continued to be an officer for many years. He instructed many candidates in their proficiency work. He was a past patron of Bethel Chapter NO 281, Order of the Eastern Star, past high priest of the Springfield Chapter RAM, past illustrious master Zabud Council No. 25, past commander, of St. John's commandry No. 20, a member of St. Chrisdry No. 20, a member of St. Christopher Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine and Ray v. Densow York Rite College.
In the Joplin Valley of the Scottish Rite, Orient of Mission, he portrayed the part of Ben Dekar in the 9-10-22 degree.
Most important of his organizations was his membership at the Fordland United Methodist Church where he was an adult Sunday School teacher and served on many church boards.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy, of the home, along with their three children, Thomas, Matthew, and Heather; his mother, Della Jones and her companion, Richard Parazzo, of Fordland; one brother, Randall Jones and wife Darlene of Rogersville; two sisters, Brenda Wright and husband Steve, Springfield, and Reatha Wilkerson and husband Charles of Fordland; one aunt, Sammie Kinser and husband Leon of Springfield; and two great-aunts, Mary Guisler and Vivian Long of New Orleans, La.
