Jack N. Blaine, 66, of Oil City, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at his residence after a courageous one-year battle with cancer.

Jack was born in Mt. Pleasant May 27, 1939, to Fred and Gwendolyn Newill Blaine.

Jack graduated from Clarion State College in 1961; taught at Rocky Grove and Cranberry high schools; and then joined the Clarion State College Physical Sciences faculty in 1966, teaching physics, physical science and astronomy. He was appointed the first director of the Donald D. Pierce Planetarium, where he provided planetarium services to literally thousands of people.

Mr. Blaine was appointed director of foundation funding in 1979 and then executive director in 1981. During his years with the foundation, he was responsible for obtaining $8.5 million in private support and increased the university's endowment from $200,000 to $2 million. He received the Distinguished Service Award from Clarion in 1981.

Jack attended Oswego University at the State University of New York to further his astronomy studies; earned his master's from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio; and completed all but his doctoral dissertation at the University of Pittsburgh.

He was appointed the first vice president for development and institutional advancement in 1984 and held that office until 1992 when he returned to the classroom to teach until his retirement in May 1997. Additionally, he served on the board of Oil City Hospital, Oil City Housing Authority and Sawmill Center for the Arts.

After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed spending their winter months in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Jack enjoyed sports of all types and was an avid golfer, having been a member of Wanango Country Club, Mayfield Golf Club and Pinecrest Country Club. Presently, he was a member of Cross Creek Resort.

Mr. Blaine was an active member of Good Hope Lutheran Church.

Jack married Judith A. Marchinke April 21, 1962, who survives.

Surviving family members include his wife of 43 years; a daughter, Jacqueline Blose, her husband, Robert, and their daughter, Autumn, of Fryburg; a son, Jonathan, his wife, Kathryn, and their son, Seth, of Meadville; a brother, B. Richard Blaine of Uniontown; a sister, Kathy Smith and her husband, Gary, of Leechburg; three sisters-in-law, Linda Blaine of Indian Head, and Donna Bucholz and Laurene Welms of Oil City; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Blaine Jr.

Friends may call at Morrison Funeral Home, 110 Petroleum St., Oil City, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Good Hope Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Philip Scherr and the Rev. William Kay, cousin of Mrs. Blaine, presiding.

Interment will be in Brandon Cemetery.

The family requests memorials be made to Good Hope Lutheran Church, 800 Moran St., Oil City, Pa. 16301; Hospice/Visiting Nurse Association Foundation; or the American Cancer Society.
