Ross Sterling Cheney, 75, longtime resident of Shelley, passed away June 20, 2009, at Beacon Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Pocatello.

He was born Aug. 12, 1933, in Laketown, Utah, to Ross Simon and Elma Weston Cheney. He graduated from Rich High School in Laketown and attended Utah State University, where he studied agriculture. He served a full-time mission in the 1950s to the Eastern States Mission (Roanoke, Va.) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sterling worked hauling cattle and for Bingham County Road and Bridge until his retirement in 1994. He married Coral Christensen in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1957.

He is survived by five children, Janalyn (Steve) Jett of Caldwell, Russell Cheney of Idaho Falls, Valeen (Eric) Nelson of Shelley, Lane (Dawn) Cheney of Roanoke, Va., and Evan Cheney of Firth; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Mark Cheney of Laketown, Utah. Sterling was preceded in death by his wife, Coral; one brother, John; one sister, Connie; and an infant daughter, Ann.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 25, at the Goshen Ward Chapel, 792 N. 1090 East. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Wednesday evening at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W. Oak St. in Shelley, and from 9 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. Thursday before the services at the church. Interment will be in Goshen Cemetery.
