Marvin E. Bales member of the upper class of primary cadets in training at Gibbs Field was killed Monday at 9:30 when his plane crashed from a fairly high altitude at a point 8 miles west of Fort Stockton, just north of Leon Lake and Highway 290. Bales was practicing spins while on a solo flight and failed to pull out of the spin and spun into a crash landing, reported Capt. James W. Dietrich, Jr. Gibbs Field commanding officer.
