Services were held this morning at St. Philip’s Catholic Church with Father Francis Lemen officiating. Interment was to follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wilton.
Born Oct 12, 1917 in Chisholm, Mr. Hilligan was the son of John and Margaret Hilligan. He was raised in that city, attending high school there. He later attended Hibbing Junior College and then worked at U. S. Steel for a time. Resuming his studies at the University of Minnesota, he graduated from Minnesota Law School in 1948 and was admitted to practice in 1949.
On July 21, 1951, he married Jane Kaufman in Mankato and they came to Bemidji shortly afterwards and had lived in this area since. He became affiliated with the Smith Law Firm in 1962, presently known as Smith, Hilligan and Carpenter.
Mr. Hilligan also served for 17 years as Bemidji city attorney. President of the Ninth Judicial District Bar Association, he was a member of the local, district and state bar associations; a member of the Knights of Columbus and past Grand Knight; and a member of the Elks, Moose and Curling Clubs.
Surviving are his wife Jane; a son, Michael at home; two daughters, Jane, at home, Mrs. Ricky (Margaret) Prince of Wadena; a granddaughter Lisa; a sister, Frances Hilligan of Minneapolis; a brother H. Patrick Hilligan of Chisholm. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.
City Hall offices were closed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in his memory.
Serving as active pallbearers were Ricky Prince, Charles Ward, Jack Ward, Clayton Braaten, Henry Rossiter and Richard Tesar. Members of the Local Bar Association and John Howe were the honorary pallbearers. (Bemidji Pioneer, Mar 3, 1975)
