U.S. Congressman, Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, he graduated from Dutchess Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and commenced to practice law in Brooklyn, New York. He was a member of the Board of Supervisors for Kings County, (1844-52, 1858-70) and a member of the New York General Assembly in 1863. During the Civil War, he served as a Brigadier General in command of the Pennsylvania 5th Brigade, National Guard. After the war, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving (1873-75). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and served in the New York National Guard until his death at age 71 in Flatbush, New York.
