Civil War veteran of the 1st Regiment (Branch's Rife Regiment), South Carolina Militia and the 5th Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry, Company D.
He rose through the ranks to sergeant major of the 5th SC Cavalry, and was promoted to second lieutenant in Co. A, 5th SC Cavalry, on 15 Mar 1865. On that same day, he was wounded near Fayetteville, NC, resulting in the amputation of his left arm.
