U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Columbia College, New York City, in 1834 and received a gold medal for finishing first in his class. He received a master's degree from Columbia College, in 1837 studied law, was admitted to the bar about 1840 and commenced to practice in New York City. In 1861, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving until 1863. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and was involved literature pursuits until his death at age 48.
