Caleb served in the 3rd Regiment Tennessee Infantry, Co.G. He died April 29, 1914. Bentley suffered deafness and disease of the head as the result of a shell explosion during the Battle of Resaca, Georgia May 14, 1864. He had the misfortune to be standing by Col. Wm. Cross who was knocked to the ground. After the shell shock, this soldier had to be taken to the field hospital. He also contracted rheumatism as the result of the weather conditions at the Battle of Stone River. The weather, that particular winter, was extremely cold, wet, muddy, and disagreeable. According to the pension files of the 3rd Tennessee soldiers, the men lacked proper shelter and adequate clothing at that place and time.They pretty much slept where they stood and in wet clothes with rain, sleet and snow falling on them. They suffered greatly the rest of their lives from conditions at this particular battle. Some were pensioned for frost bitten feet and some died as the result of exposure while on sentry duty. Caleb did the duties assigned to him and continued to fight.
