Shorty Gilbert Passes Away After A Lengthy Illness

Pioneer West Sider Judge W. H. "Shorty" Gilbert passed away Tuesday night at Del Puerto Hospital after an illness that began last August. The 74 year old native of Ohio led a colorful life and had a long career of public service.

A graduate of Drake University Law School, he was admitted to the practice of law in 1912 in Iowa. He opened a law office in Patterson in 1913 and had lived in Stanislaus County since then.

He was a member of the first board of trustees when the City of Patterson was incorporated in 1919. He was appointed justice of the peace in Newman Township in 1930, resigning in 1938 when he was appointed chief probation officer of Stanislaus County, a position he held until 1944. He was appointed justice of the peace in Patterson Township November l953, and held that position until his death.

He owned an auto agency in Newman for some years. Hunting was his chief hobby, and he operated a duck club in the Tule Lake area for many years, developing and selling his own duck picker. More recently he operated a duck club on the East Side of the San Joaquin River, near the San Joaquin County line.

Services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Franklin and Downs Chapel in Modesto with Rev. Albert Foster, pastor of the local Federated Church officiating. Internment will be at the Modesto Masonic Cemetery.

He is survived by his widow, Sue, of Patterson; a daughter, Elva Jane Eastwood of Stockton; a son, Robert Gilbert of Stockton; a sister, Mrs. Julie Peters of Patterson: and six grandchildren.
