James A. Fisher, a son of Maj. Stearns Fisher, was Second Lieutenant in Company L, of the Seventh Cavalry. He was commissioned September 14, 1863 and the same day mustered into service, but before expiration of the term of his enlistment he died of disability on the 15th of April 1865.
OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - April 27, 1865
Lieutenant James A. Fisher, of the 7th Indiana Cavalry. He was born on the 7th day of April, 1836, near Wabash, Indiana, where he passed the most of his boyhood days ... At the age of twenty he went to Nebraska where he remained for several years, engaged some of the time as a Surveyor of Public Lands. He then went to work in the mines in the region now known as the territory of Colorado until the breaking out of the rebellion, at an early period he enlisted as a private in the 3rd Colorado Regiment, in which he served nearly a year, when he was transferred to Co. L of the 7th Indiana Cavalry ... His command was ordered to rendezvous at Louisville, Ky., when he was attacked by a disease, from which he rallied to such an extent as to reach his home and die among his friends, thanking God that he had permitted him to see, before he died, the beginning of the end of the terrible war in which he, as many others had done, was about to lay down his life. Calmly and peacefully he went to his grave.
