Robert Galey, 88, widely-known pioneer oil and gas operator of Beaver, died Saturday in his winter home at Orlando, Florida.
He was among one of the first oil and gas operators in Pennsylvania and had engaged in that business for many years prior to his retirement from active life.
He was born near Parker, Pa. on March 30, 1843, the son of Robert and Rachel Spahr Galey, who came to the United States from Northern Ireland in 1819. Shortly after Col. E.L. Drake drilled the first oil well in Pennsylvania near Titusville in 1839, Mr. Galey became interested in the production of petroleum.
In 1884, he moved to Rochester and from there he moved to Beaver where he had since resided, spending 6 months of the year in Beaver and 6 months at his winter home in Orlando.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Margaret E. Galey; one son, George B. Galey, Beaver and one daughter Anna M. Galey.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon in the home of his son at 3rd Street and Iroquois Place, Beaver. Burial will take place at Beaver Cemetery.
