He served the Union during the Civil War. He enlisted in Company B, Iowa 14th Infantry Regiment on 26 Nov 1862 and mustered out on 16 Nov 1864 at Davenport, Iowa.
At the time of the 1900 census he was widowed living in Foots Creek Jackson County, Oregon. In May 1902 he applied from Jackson County for treatment at the Oregon Soldiers' Home in Roseburg, Oregon. He entered in July 1902. Earl died there in 1904.
