U.S. Congressman. He attended Central College, Cornell University, (1870-73) and worked for the New York Sun newspaper, (1873-82). He was a member of the Board of Education of Brooklyn, in 1882, a trustee of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, in 1884 and secretary of the board of bridge trustees, in 1885. In addition, he was appointed postmaster of Brooklyn by President Cleveland, serving (1886-90), president of the board of education of Brooklyn, in 1887, president of the Kings County Trust Company, (1889-93) and president of the National Union Bank of New York City, (1893-1900). In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as a trustee of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and a trustee of Cornell University, until his death.
