US Congressman. Learning the printing trade, he established the Citizen newspaper at Wiscasset, Maine, in 1833. Moving to New York City in 1836, he established the New York Atlas in 1838, was a member of the board of aldermen, and the naval storekeeper for the Port of New York. In 1863, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth Congress, serving until 1865. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his journalistic pursuits until his death.
