He ran away and joined the Confederate Army during the War Between the States. He fought with the 2nd Tennessee Battery and served under Captain Winston. During the last year of the war, he was captured at Blakeley near Mobile and carried to New Orleans as a prisoner, where he remained about a month. He was then transferred to Vicksburg, where he was held for three months until the end of the war.
