OWYHEE AVALANCHE
SEPT 18 1898
FATAL ACCIDENT

Last Sunday Evening W H Calleck, of DeLamar, while in the cabin of a friend, met with one of those unfortunate accidents which occur quite frequently from the seeming careless handling of firearms.

From reports we learn that Mr. Calleck had just finished his shifts
work, and on his way home stopped for a few moments in his neighbor's
cabin, that of Harry Cadwell.

It seems there were several gentlemen in the room at the time, when one of them made the remark that he was desirous of making the purchase of a six shooter, and Mr. Cadwell turned to his for the purpose of showing it for examination.

On taking the weapon from the shelf he broke it down to extract
the shells, throwing, as he supposed all of them out. But the fatal one remained and when the trigger was pulled to show that the weapon was in perfect order, the hammer struck the remaining shell, the report came, and Mr Cadwell was horror struck on learning that he had shot his visiting friend who was sitting just opposite and watching the working of the gun. Medical aid was called for the unfortunate man, but the wound was a fatal one, and from which death resulted about thirty hours later.

The deceased was about forty years of age, a respected and
esteemed citizen of DeLamar, a son on England's soil and leaves a wife and six children there to mourn his untimely loss. His first words immediately after being shot were "no one is to blame, it was an accident."

Harry Cadwell is one of Owyhee's good citizens and is deeply
grieved over the unfortunate affair.

Dr. J N Weston the county coroner held an autopsy examination
and found that the ball had entered on the left side at the eight rib,and taking a downward course, had passed through the liver, lodging in the right pelvic bone.

The burial services took place Wednesday afternoon, when a large
number of friends followed the remains to its final resting place.

Survived by 3 Great Grandsons who carry his memories with them; Neil, Stephen and Christopher
