A Mass of Christian Burial for Northeast Portland resident John William Bergin will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Therese Catholic Church. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery.
Mr. Bergin died Monday of emphysema. He was 66.
He was born July 18, 1925, in Monroe, Wis., and moved to Salem as a teenager. He moved to Portland after World War II. He married his wife, Beverly, on Feb. 14, 1946.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star medal for his action in battles in the Philippines.
Mr. Bergin worked in construction for various Portland companies and later as a food salesman 14 years in the 1960s and 1970s for Standard Brands selling Planters Peanuts. Mr. Bergin was a salesman for Anzen Importers from the 1970s until he retired in the early 1980s.
Survivors besides his wife include his son, Jack Jr. of Portland; daughter, Jean Ann Baker of Portland; sisters, Mary Lynch of Kansas City, Mo., and Theresa Morales of Oregon City; brothers, Robert of Portland and Donald of Milwaukie; and two grandchildren.
The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to St. Therese Catholic Church.
