Donald was the fifth of six children born to George Chauncy and Clarice Verna Lee (Lang) Colvin. He married Margaret N. Bice in 1950 and they were the parents of five children: Donald Dean Jr., David Lynn, Verna LeAnne, Mikel Wayne and Ted Irwin.
