Mr. James W. "Jimmy" Horton, Jr. - a native of Mobile, AL and a lifelong resident of Wilmer, AL died Sunday, June 28, 2009 in a local hospital. Mr. Horton served as Mayor of Wilmer from 1988 until 1992. He retired from Mobile Infirmary after 23 years of service and was a faithful board member of Corner Stone Full Gospel Church for ten years. He was the owner and operator of Jimmy Horton House Plan Design and co-owner of J and C Lawn Care. Mr. Horton is survived by his parents, Walter and Mae Nell Horton, of Wilmer, AL; his brothers and sisters, Joetta (Gene) Finch, of Semmes, AL, Larry (Annette) Horton, of Wilmer, AL, Diane (Dave) Straker, of Nashville, IN, Ronny (Petra) Horton, of El Paso, TX, Gary (Diana) Horton, of Wilmer, AL, Kimberly Williams, of Semmes, AL, and Darla Kay (Tony) Smith, of Semmes, AL; devoted friends, Dickey and Tammy Downey; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. until 3 P.M. on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Radney Funeral Home, Dauphin Street. Funeral services will follow at 3 P.M. in the chapel of Radney Funeral Home. June 1972 Jimmy had a diving accident. The impact of hitting the water broke his neck, severing his spinal cord. He was paralyzed from the neck down. The doctors gave him a 50% chance of survival and said he would never walk again. After months in rehab and persistant hard work, Jimmy came home to spend the remainder of his life in a wheelchair. However, everyone who knew him, knows he led a very productive life. He worked and bought his own home and pursued every interest he chose. He lived his life for God and he was a mentor for many people. He accomplished more in his wheelchair than most people accomplish on their feet.
The week before his death, Jimmy told our niece Kendra, that when he got to heaven he would ask God if he could be a messanger. He was so "tired of sitting" that he wanted to run all over heaven, and he never wanted to sit down again.
On his death bed Jimmy kept looking upward. I asked him what he was looking at, and he told me his Angel was waiting for him. I asked what his Angel's name was, and if he was ready to go with with his Angel. Jimmy told me his Angel was "Jaces", but he wanted to wait until our brother arrived from Texas. Ronny got to the hospital before midnight, and spent some alone time with Jimmy.
When the time came for Jimmy to go with "Jaces", Jimmy raised up and moved his arms as if he were running toward the Pearly Gates. As soon as he got there, he raised his arms and began to fly. He was at peace. It was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen.
Jimmy, We love you and miss you! You will be in our hearts forever.
