The son of Johann Philipp Depper I and Susanna Catherina Mathes, Petrus "Peter" Depper was born in Freinsheim, Bavaria, Germany.

Peter married Clara Josephine Freiermuth on 16 Oct 1849 in Kallstadt, Bavaria. 4 of their children were born in Germany--in 1850, 1851, 1853 and 1856.

One of Peter's older brothers, Johann Jacob "John" Depper, was the first member of the family to leave Germany and set out for America. He married Lena Mohle in early 1851 in St. Louis, Missouri. They later moved to Calhoun County, Illinois and had a total of 9 children.

Peter's parents, "Philipp" and Susanna, soon followed and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on 20 May 1853. They were passengers on board a ship named the Clinton. They were accompanied by 3 of their children, Elisabeth, Eva and Margaretha, as well as 1 of their grandsons.

Peter's sister, Eva Depper, married John Schulz in 1853. They were the parents of at least 4 children and lived in Calhoun County. John Schulz was one of the founders of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Brussels, Illinois.

Another of Peter's brothers, Henry, was born on 03 Nov 1830 in Freinsheim, Bavaria. He married Mrs. Elizabeth (nee Schatten) Grieshammer in St. Louis, Missouri on 04 Feb 1865. She was the mother of 2 children from her marriage to Michael Grieshammer. Henry and Elizabeth then had 2 children of their own, and the family lived in Calhoun County. He died there on 01 Nov 1871.

Peter was the last of the Deppers to bring his family to the United States. Peter, Clara and their children, George and Henry, traveled to America on board the Sewall and arrived in New Orleans on 22 Feb 1858. [Note: The Deppers' youngest child at that time, baby Barbara Depper, was not listed as a passenger, but all later census records indicate that she was born in Germany.]

Like his parents and siblings, Peter and his family settled in Calhoun County, Illinois. He began farming in Deer Plain, located in the southern part of the county. Their next child, Lorence Peter Depper, was born there.

Clara gave birth to the Deppers' youngest child, Louisa, in August of 1865. Clara died in childbirth or shortly thereafter.

Children from first marriage: 3 sons, 3 daughters.

After Clara's death, Peter married a widow named Katharina (nee Weiner) Hattemer on 19 Apr 1866 in St. Louis, Missouri. She had been left with four young children of her own when her first husband, Bernhardt Hattemer, was killed in the Civil War.

Peter signed guardianship papers for the 4 Hattemer children on 21 Aug 1866. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on 16 Sep 1872.

Katharina died in 1898.

Children from second marriage: 2 step-daughters, 2 step-sons.

At the time of his death in early 1904, Peter was 77 years, 9 months and 6 days old.
