Walter Ward Buss, 84, of La Porte, died June 30, 2009 in his home surrounded by his family.

Walter was born Aug. 12, 1924, in La Porte, to Orlando and Eleanora (Foltz) Buss and was a lifelong resident of Rolling Prairie.

On June 25, 1949, in La Porte, he married Rita Gallagher who survives.

Mr. Buss graduated from Rolling Prairie High School in 1942. In 1941 he was part of the Rolling Prairie Basketball team that were the La Porte County Sectional Champs.

In 1944, Mr. Buss enlisted in the Marine Corp, where he proudly served his country in World War II in the Pacific area. In 1950, he started working for Hunt's Well drilling for 39 years until his retirement as co-owner. Mr. Buss served as a special deputy under Sheriff Herrbach in the 50s. He also served on the Rolling Prairie and New Prairie School Board. In 1947, he joined the Kankakee Volunteer Fire Department in Rolling Prairie where he served as chief for 25 years until his retirement in 1984. On Nov. 7, 2001, he was presented a Sagamore of the Wabash Award for his commitment to his community and Indiana.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his brother, Paul Buss, and his sister, Margarite Prestin.

Surviving are his seven children, Daniel (Karen) Buss of Rolling Prairie, Norene (Dave) Pieschala of La Porte, Patricia (Tom) Krout of La Porte, Melissa (Phil) Kindig of Rolling Prairie, John (Debbie) Buss of La Porte, Lucinda (Mark) Nietzel of Michigan City, Jill (Ray) Thorpe of Union Mills, 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Sunday, July 5, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Cutler Funeral Home. There will be a memorial service given by the Kankakee Township Volunteer Fire Department at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Services will be held Monday, July 6, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Cutler Funeral Home, with Rev. Steve Laue officiating. Interment will follow in the Rolling Prairie Cemetery with full military honors.
