US Congressman, US Senator. Born in Hempstead, New York, and educated in Scotland, he was serving as a professor of chemistry, botany, and natural history in Columbia College when he was elected to represent New York's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives in 1800. Serving that District from 1801 to 1803, he was subsequently re-elected representing the 3rd District, serving that from 1803 until his resignation in 1804 to assume the office of Senator. He served as a Senator from New York in the United States Senate from 1804 to 1809. in 1810 he was again elected to the United States House, filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of Congressman William Dearing. He again served the 2nd District, this time from 1810 to 1813.
