James was the youngest of nine children born to Mary Ann Miller and Frederick Doll. On March 30, 1892, he married Martha Jane Anglemyer at Tannersville Methodist Church in Tannersville, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. Rev. J. W. Hudson performed the ceremony. The couple raised six children: Robert Franklin, Clayton Earl, Carrie Belle, Moses Ernest, Russell Grant, and Essie Lorraine. He was a farmer, and was employed from 1923-1932 by the Worthington Mower Company in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania.
