She was a graduate of Boston University and St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing. After entering religion, she was an instructor of nursing at Boston College, then head of the St. Joseph College Division of Nursing in Emmitsburg, MD, and transferred to DePaul Hospital, Norfolk, VA in 1959.
After attending a nursing conference in St. Louis, MO, she was traveling back to Norfolk on Capital Airlines Flight 20 on January 18, 1960. The flight crashed near Holdcroft, VA. There were no survivors.
The Sister Josephine Cavanagh Nursing Award, for nursing competence and academic distinction, was established in her honor at St. Joseph's College, Emmitsburg, MD.
