Deceased Name: Gary Harold Gunnerson
1942-2009

Gary Harold Gunnerson passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Saint Luke's Hospital surrounded by family after fighting complications from a MRSA infection.

Gary was born Feb. 21, 1942, the 4th of 8 children to Harold Ola and Helen Clark Gunnerson in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, earning his Life Scout. While in high school, Gary focused heavily on his artistic pursuits, thriving as an oil painter and sculptor. He has always enjoyed photography as well as listening to classical music. He lettered in golf and played football and then graduated from Granite High School in 1960.

After graduation he was employed at the Genealogical Society. Gary served an LDS mission to the Southern States Mission 1961-63. Just a few short months after his mission, he was in a motorcycle accident where his little niece Sherry was killed, and he was severely injured, spending eight months recovering in a hospital. With the limited mobility in his right arm, Gary had to learn to function primarily using his left hand, as well as learning to walk again. Despite these lifelong physical challenges, he went on to live an accomplished and rewarding life.

Gary married his sweetheart, Dorothy Ann MacKay, on Nov. 20, 1964, in the Salt Lake Temple. He then went on to graduate from the LDS Business College with an Associate Degree in Business/Marketing.

In 1967 Gary began working as a clerk for American Oil, and in 1969 he was appointed to Retail Marketing Representative and consequently moved his family to Chubbuck, Idaho. His dream of becoming a small business owner came true when he purchased Lava Mobile Estates and Campground in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho. He served as a Lions Club member in the Lava Hot Springs and Boise/Vista clubs. Gary was also passionate about local politics. From 1971 to 1975, he served as Director of the South Eastern Idaho Community Action Agency (SEICAA) in Pocatello. His love of helping others was apparent through his work with senior citizens and social programs. He went on to work for various political campaigns, write grants, and help draft legislation for the State of Idaho. Continuing his career in public service, Gary moved his family to Boise, Idaho, in 1977 to work as Bureau Chief for the Dept. of Law Enforcement Fraud Investigation Unit. He also held positions as Bureau Chief of Motor Carrier Safety and Administrator of the Administrative Services Division.

Later, he worked in a sales capacity for New York Life Insurance. In 1988, Gary began working for Idaho Counties Reciprocal Management Program (ICRMP) as a Loss Control Coordinator and later became Public Affairs Coordinator; he retired from ICRMP in Nov. of 2006. He was able to enjoy the entire state of Idaho during his many travels with American Oil, SEICAA and as a Risk Assessment specialist for ICRMP. He knew county government very well.

Gary was very active in the LDS church and held numerous positions. In 1984 he became the Bishop of the Boise 30th Ward until 1989. He has also served as Pocatello 35th Ward 2nd Counselor (1970), Transient Bishop, Stake High Counselor, Seminary Teacher, Boise State University LDS Institute of Religion Teacher, and Sunbeam Teacher. Gary enjoyed working with the youth of the church and continued teaching up to the time of his passing.

He enjoyed his retirement years and especially being with his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. The grandchildren will miss their weekend "bumming" excursions with grandpa. Gary was a cherished husband and a great dad, whose counsel and love will be greatly missed. Gary is preceded in death by his son, Robert Gary Gunnerson; brother, Keith Gunnerson; and sister, Norma Clark. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Tammy (Thomas) Fischetti, Dan (Leslie) Gunnerson, Dalana (Mark) Bishop, Becky (Jamie) Lanningham, and Christy (Jerel) Thomas; as well as 14 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Dixie (Guy) Magers, Patricia (Roy) Sandstrom, Karen (Joel) Harrison, Allan (Vicki) Gunnerson, Lee (Joan) Gunnerson, and Sue (Bob) Briggs.

Our family would like to express sincere gratitude and thanks to the medical staff at St. Luke's ICU/CCU for their compassion and care for Gary over the past few weeks. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Relyea Funeral Chapel. A viewing will take place Thursday, July 2, at Relyea Funeral Chapel, 318 N. Latah from 6-8 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 3 at the LDS Boise Idaho West Stake Center, 3700 S. Maple Grove Road, Boise with a viewing one hour prior to service. Burial services will be held on Monday, July 6 at 10 a.m. at Dry Creek Cemetery, Boise.
