Catherine Helvetia "Katie" Armstrong, 91, of Taylorville died at 12:05am Saturday, February 1, 2003, in St. Vincent Memorial Hospital. She was born February 22, 1911, in Lincoln, the daughter of John H. and Sylvia F. McKinney Bryles. She married Joseph Roy "Joe" Armstrong on February 4, 1930, in Decatur. During World War II, she worked at the munitions plant in Illiopolis. Later she worked at the Taylorville High School cafeteria. She then worked as a housekeeper and caregiver for many years. She later became a home health care provider until her retirement in 1991. She enjoyed luncheons with friends and Bible study after her retirement. She joined the Taylorville Assembly of God now known as New Hope Assembly, in 1964 and remained a member of the church. Surviving are her daughter, Betty (husband Chester) Brown of Creal Springs; sons: Joe Jr. (wife Mildred) Armstrong of Herrin and Jack Armstrong of Taylorville; grandchildren: Gary (wife Brenda) Brown of Dalton City, Michael (wife Tricia) Armstrong of Paducah, KY, Tammy (husband Tom) Clawson of Moberly, MO, Cheryl (husband Ed) Clevenger of Morrisonville, Shawn (wife Barbi) Armstrong of Carrollton, TX, and Kenton Armstrong of Garden City, KS; great-grandchildren: Sondra and Jamie Brown, Katie and Jason Armstrong, Bruce and Misty Clevenger, Christian Armstrong and Trina White; and great-great grandchildren: Dakota and Cameron Clevenger, Ian Armstrong, Whisper Mizeur and Mark Reid. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers: John Jr., Clarence, Conrad and Theodore Bryles; and sisters: Beulay Ashby, Peal Woodson and Thelma N. Woyner. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, February 4, in Shafer Funeral Home, with Pastor Dean Rose officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00pm Monday February 3, in the funeral home.
