William Adam "Bill" Hausmann, Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 10, 1915. He was the youngest of three children of William and Olive (Fursdon) Hausmann. Both Bill's paternal and maternal ancestors had originated in Germany. His father worked as a plumber in East Cleveland. Bill's mother died in 1933 at the age of 50 and his father died the following year at the age of 48.

Sometime prior to 1940 Bill moved with his sister, Shirley (1910–1978) to the town of Convoy in northwest Ohio. He had completed three years at Shaw High School in East Cleveland but did not graduate. Shirley married Walter McDaniel (1902–1985) who worked as a typesetter for a local newspaper in Convoy. Bill lived with Walter and Shirley on Cherry Street and was employed as a truck driver for the Convoy Equity Exchange grain company.

Bill married Vera "Marcile" Rager on August 26, 1941, which was Marcile's 18th birthday. Bill was 25 years old. They were married by Reverend Laughner at Trinity Lutheran Church in Convoy. According to the 1940 census, Marcile was employed as a "bread wrapper" in her parents' bakery. Shirley McDaniel worked as a salesclerk at the bakery during the 1960s. Shirley's husband, Walter, was a third cousin of Marcile's grandmother, Luella (Woten) Rager.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor and on March 30, 1942, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Lockbourne Army Airfield in Ohio. His military enlistment papers record Bill as being 6' 2" tall and weighing 171 pounds. Bill was hospitalized in August 1944 for the treatment of pneumonia and steatocystoma. He and Marcile's only child, Susan, was born on September 13, 1946.

Bill was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and admitted to the Veterans' Hospital in Dayton, Ohio on October 23, 1946. Bill died in Dayton on January 2, 1947, at the age of 32. His death certificate indicated that his "usual occupation" was as a machinist. His body was returned to Convoy and interred at the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
