Nee Emma Thimmig, she was born in the town of Wilson on Apr. 16, 1882, the daughter of the late Morris and Mary Thimmig. She was married to Frank Gartman in 1902 and in 1908 re-married to William H. Mattes of the town of Schleswig. The couple lived in Rockville for a short while, but for the past 40 years she has made her home in Kiel.
Mrs. Mattes was a member of the St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church, the Frauen-verein of the church, the American Legion Auxiliary, Gold Star Mothers, and the Germania Society.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. I.J. (Elsie) Wilson of Edna TX, and Mrs. Leonard (Linda) Kraft of Manitowoc; two sons, Milton of Walnut IL, and Winston of Lanark IL; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Herman Gartman and Mrs. Bertha Gartman, both of the town of Wilson.
Her parents, husband, one daughter, and two sons, all preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wed. at the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church. Rev. E.L. Worthman will officiate, and burial will be in the Rockville cemetery. The body will lie in state at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, from 2 p.m. Tues., until 11 a.m. Wed., when it will be removed to the church, to lie in state until the hour of services.
