Oscar Raphael Anttila

Oscar Raphael Anttila, age 94 of Alpha, passed away September 23, 2001, at the Ruth Hospice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was born on March 2, 1907 in Mansfield, the son of the late John and Hilda (Perry) Anttila.

His parents were immigrants of Finland and in 1914, they moved to Alpha and Mr. Anttila graduated from the Alpha High School in 1925. He joined the U.S. Air Corps in 1943 and he attended Army Radio School and became a communications technician. During WWII, he served in the fighter squadron of the "Flying Tigers" in the China, Burma, and India Theatre of Operations. In November 1945, he was honorably discharged and received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service Medal. On Dec. 12, 1945, he married Edith Webber and the couple resided in Alpha. Before retiring in 1970, Mr. Anttila worked as a groundman and meter man for Wisconsin Electric Power Company. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2891, and a member of United Lutheran Church. His interests were his family, reading, listening to the radio and keeping in touch with his friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; a brother, Laurie; sisters Ruth, Bertha DallaGrana of Florence, and Kathryn Johnson of Appleton.

Oscar Anttila is survived by a daughter, Ora (Peter) Dillenburg of West Allis; one granddaughter, Kara Dillenburg of West Allis; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 27, 2001, from 5-7 p.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home in Crystal Falls, and on Friday, Sept. 28, from 10-11 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls. The Eastside Veterans Council will conduct a pass and revue at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Dr. John Linna will officiate. A full honor guard will be provided at the graveside by the Eastside Veterans. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, NY 10023-7505. The Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home of Crystal Falls is in charge of arrangements.
