In 1935 Donald graduated from Nichols High School. On December 17, 1938, he married Marie Rathjen at the First Christian Church parsonage in Muscatine, Iowa. He had been engaged in farming most of his life and also butchering.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Ramona (Tom) Holcomb of Nichols, Judith Bender of Kalona, Nancy (Alan) Burr of Lone Tree, and Christine Mills of Columbia, Missouri; three sons, Virgil of Iowa City, Michael, and Tim both of Nichols; one sister, Jessie (Albert) Lenz of Lone Tree; one brother, Benjamin Mills of Muscatine; thirteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister, Dorothy (Wallace) Hansen.
