U.S. Congressman. Educated by his father, he was employed for a time as a clerk in Detroit, Michigan, and later as a bank clerk in Albany, New York. He studied theology, was ordained a minister, his first pastorate was in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1848, officiated in Cleveland, Ohio (1849-51), in Buffalo, New York (1855-60) and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1860-66). During the Civil War, he served in Virginia with the United States Christian Commission as chaplain of the 47th Regiment, National Guard of New York. After the war, he continued his ministerial duties in Brooklyn, New York until 1880. In 1881, he was elected as an Independent candidate to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving until 1883. After his term, he was appointed by President Arthur a commissioner to inspect the Pacific Railroad. He also continued as a pastorate until his death at age 62.
