Orvil A. Rhoades, 91, of Lafayette, formerly of Fowler, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, July 4, 2009, in Clarian Arnett Hospital.

He was born in Benton County, Indiana to the late Henry E. and Edna Booth Rhoades. He married Doris Jean McCain in 1946, and she survives.

Also surviving are five children, Laura Gylte (Erik) of Saetre, Norway, Linda Rhoades of Orland Park, Il., Jean Ambrose (Rob) of Martinsville, Dan Rhoades (Linda) of Fowler and Howard Mack Rhoades (Donna) of Lafayette; a sister, Helen Golding of Valparaiso; four grandchildren, Israel Rhoades, Brian Rhoades, Leif Gylte and Amanda Rhoades and two step grandchildren, Keila Miller and Josh Cooper.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Perry Rhoades, Clifford Rhodes and Roy Rhoades and three sisters, Dora Edna Rhoades, Bessie Chrisman, and Vernice Rausch.

Mr. Rhoades was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific theater.

After returning from the service, he farmed in Pine Township in Benton County until retiring in 1977.
