Our precious mother, Louie Gill Richards Broadbent, age 93, slipped peacefully away from mortality in her Salt Lake City home on June 14, 2000.
She was born in her parents home in Sugar House, Salt Lake City, Utah on October 25, 1906 to Willard B. and Louie Snelgrove Richards. She married her sweetheart, Benn E. Broadbent on January 25, 1934 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were married 64 years when he passed away on April 22, 1998. Once again they are happily united.
Mother had a happy childhood growing up in Sugar House surrounded by her parents, brothers and sisters and extended family. She was the youngest of 12 children. Her father was 60 years old and her mother was 50 years old when she was born. She was always proud of her Pioneer heritage. Her grandfather, Dr. Willard Richards was with the Prophet Joseph Smith when he was martyred in the Carthage Jail in Illinois. Dr. Richards was with the first party of Pioneers to enter the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Her father, Willard B. Richards crossed the plains as an infant in 1848.
Mother graduated from the LDS High School, attended the University of California, and graduated from the University of Utah in elementary education. She taught kindergarten at the Oniqua School in Salt Lake City until she had to resign so she could marry our father. They had four children: Lou Ann, Mary Jayne, Ruth Natalie, and Benn Richards. Mother's life centered around her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and caring grandmother. Her greatest joy was our happiness. As we married and had our own children she welcomed each one with love and support as she has with each new great-grandchild. She was affectionately called "Grandma Gill" by her grandchildren. Each family member has been a special blessing to her. Mother had a sharp mind and an incredible memory. She was aware of each member of her family until the last moments of her life.
Mother was an active member of the LDS Church. She served in Primary, Jr. Sunday School, Relief Society, MIA, taught Seminary and was a visiting teacher.
Mother belonged to the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at the University of Utah, the University of Utah Mother's Club, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers 33rd Camp, the "Chat Abouts", and the Salt Lake Knife and Fork Club. She was the co-founder of Wasatch Meats with our father.
Mother had many friends. She found great joy writing letters to family and friends, her missionary grandchildren and sending flowers and notes of encouragement and love to her sick friends. She shared her beloved Mt. Air summer home with family and friends for many years. Her last days were spent thinking of others and bringing joy into their lives.
Mother loved the beautiful things of this world. She collected fine porcelain figurines and over 300 thimbles from all over the world. Her hands were always busy. Over the years she made over 40 pieces of needle point and many porcelain figures. She crocheted trim around hundreds of baby blankets which she lovingly gave to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and children worldwide. She enriched our lives by providing us an exposure to beautiful music, tasteful art, the theater and literature.
Mother is survived by her children: Mary Jayne B. and Robert K. Dellenbach, Ruth B. and Gary E. Wright, Benn Richards and Marilyn M. Broadbent, Paul H. and Cecelia C. Rich; 28 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren with three more coming this year.
She was preceded in death by our father; our sister, Lou Ann B. Rich; her parents; and all her brothers and sisters.

Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
