New London, NH - James Ernest "Jim" Bewley, 84, of County Road, died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Harris Hill Nursing Home in Concord.

He was born in Quincy, Mass., on April 23, 1922, the son of James Ernest and Ruth M. (Pinel) Bewley.

He graduated from Braintree (Mass.) High School in 1940, the Peddie School in 1941, and attended the University of Michigan from1941 to 1942 before entering the US Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married Dorothea Gay in 1943.

He worked for H.T. Ripley Iron & Steel Corporation in Everett, Mass., from 1943 to 1946, and Thompson-Hoague in Concord, from 1952 to1961.

Jim summered in the New London area since he was 16 when he became caddy master at the Lake Sunapee County Club, New London. He and Mrs. Bewley operated the Royal Tarn Lodge in Springfield from 1946, moving to New London in 1952.

He worked for the New London-Springfield Water System Precinct from 1959 to 1984, becoming superintendent in 1965. He was a field consultant for Weston Engineering in Concord from 1984 to 1992.

He was a member of The First Baptist Church of New London, and member and past Master of King Solomon's Lodge No. 14 F & AM, member consistory Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, and the Bektash Temple Shrine.

Mr. Bewley served as a selectman for the town of Springfield from 1950 to 1951 and for the town of New London from 1963 to 1972, serving on the New London Planning Board, and the first Zoning Board of Adjustment.

He was a member and former president of the New Hampshire Water Works Association, a member of the American Legion, the New London Historical Society, and the Country Squires. He was active in the Cub Scouts, past president of the Elkins Fish and Game Club, Chairman of New London Hospital Day, and Director and Chairman of the Upper Valley Regional Council. Mr. Bewley was a member of the Boys Club and in 1999 received the William Marbury Beall Award. The New London Service Organization presented the Third-of-a-Century Award to Mr. and Mrs. Bewley in 2000 for outstanding community service.

"Jim" was an avid Red Sox fan, golfer, and past member of the Lake Sunapee Country Club. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, and building, drafting the plans for and building his own home. He was also an accomplished artist.

His son, Jon N. Bewley, died in June 2006.

Members of his family surviving include his wife of over 62 years, Dorothea L. (Gay) Bewley of New London; a son, Jay B. Bewley of New London; two daughters, Dorna L. Bewley of Cambridge, England, and Marcia L. Bewley of New London; five grandchildren, Timothy, Alexandra, Brooke, Jon and Daisy; a brother and his wife, Robert W. and Shirley Bewley of Cary, N.C.; and three nieces, Jan, Robin, and Beth.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2006, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St., New London.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 27, 2006, at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of New London with the Rev. Jeffrey Zurheide, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a children's hospital or a children's camp of one's choice.
