Juanelle "Nell" Burkett Curtis was born on August 27, 1920 in Mills County, Texas, and passed away February 11, 2003 in Hereford, Texas, at the age of 82. Nell's mother was Evelyn "Dove" Barton Burkett and father was Edgar L. Burkett of Mullin, Texas. Nell was married to Alton F. Curtis of Goliad, Texas, on January 20, 1943. At the end of WWII, when Alton completed his tour of duty, the couple settled in Goliad. They had been married for over 50 years when he passed away in November, 1993. She was preceded in death by an older sister Blanche Burkett Britt, and a younger brother Jake Burkett. Nell provided leadership to the community by actively participating in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, high school band and drama/speech. She served as the Goliad County Extension Agent's Assistant when she furthered the development of the Goliad County 4-H Clubs. She worked as an Administrator of the Goliad Nursing Home, and Director of the Goliad Senior Citizens' Center, and was a loyal lifetime member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Jerry & Donna Curtis of Hereford, Texas; son Alton "Burkett" Curtis of Goliad, Texas; daughter Claye Curtis of DeSoto, Texas; daughter Lorrie Curtis, and grandsons Layton K. Curtis Brooker and Sterling R. Curtis Brooker, of San Antonio, Texas.

The memorial service will be conducted at the Goliad Church of Christ Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 2:00 pm. Graveside services will be in Mullin, Texas on Friday, February 14, 2003 at 11:00 am. The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Goliad County 4-H Clubs and Goliad Church of Christ.
