Miss Mary Opal Brown, 69, and former librarian for St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines passed away in an Asheville hospital following a short illness. Miss Brown, who resided at 651 Lakeshore Dr, Asheville, was the daughter of the late Charles W. (C.W.) and Josephine Walton Brown of Asheville. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Van Brown Jr. and sister Miss Frances Ruth Brown.
Miss Brown was born in South Dakota and attended Miss Fond's school in Asheville as well as Asheville and Salem Colleges. She served as the librarian for St. Genevieve's for 13 years and worked as a secretary and board member prior to that for the YWCA. She was also a former area supervisor for the library project of the Works Progress Administration. She was an active member of Central United Methodist Church and is survived only by two cousins, Mrs. Frank Smith of Charlotte, NC and Henry Brown of Fairmont, West Virginia.
Services were held at 11am at Central United Methodist Church and were conducted by the Rev. Embree Blackard. Burial followed in the Brown Family Plot at Riverside Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Morris-Hendon-Black Funeral Home.
