John was the youngest of six children born to John and Jane (Brown) Foster. He married Catherine (Westfall) in 1869 and they had nine children: Mary Jane, Rachel Catherine, Flora Alice, Orren Miles, Martha Belle, Charles Clark, Lida May, George Andrew and Clara Elzie.
