He was born in Hinds County, Mississippi, in 1846. He attended Bethany College, then served as a private in Comp H, 4th Reg, MS cavalry during the Civil War. He graduated from University of Mississippi in 1868. He worked as a lawyer in Coffeeville and Oxford. In 1877, he taught law at University of Mississippi. He served as its Chancellor from 1887 to 1891. He then taught law at Millsaps College. He died in Jackson, Mississippi, aged 70. Became a lawyer in 1871. A professor of law & then Chancellor (1887-1891) at Ole Miss. A professor & dean of the Law School at Millsaps College. He turned down an appointment to the MS Supreme Court from Governor Vardaman to remain at his practice.
