Henrietta May Brubaker Ferguson, Sept. 2, 1907-Sept. 23, 2004, Henrietta May Brubaker FERGUSON, 97, Parsons House, 14325 Eagle Run Drive, Omaha, Neb., died at 5:05 p.m. Thursday at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Neb. She had been in failing health since Sept. 18.
Born on Sept. 2, 1907, in Rochester, she was the daughter of Claude and Vada Mae Zink Brubaker. She lived most of her life in the Rochester area. In 1992, she moved to Omaha, Neb., where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law until her death. She graduated from Rochester High School in the Class of 1925. She was a member of the Zebra women's basketball and tennis teams. In 1928, she graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago. On Aug. 31, 1935, she married Fred Grant Ferguson in Chicago. He preceded her in death in January 1991.
A nurse, she worked as a private duty nurse at St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, from 1929- 1930 and 1935-1937. From 1930-1935, she served as a member of the Chicago Visiting Nurses Association on the south side. She worked for the Chicago Health Department from 1937-1942. She worked for the Fulton County Health Department from 1951-1972. She was the county health nurse and was instrumental in forming the school nurse program for all Fulton County schools. She started the screening of students for hearing and sight disabilities. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church, now Trinity United Methodist Church, Rochester. She was a life member of the Alumni Association of Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago; the Crippled Children's Society, later the Fulton County Crippled Children's and Adults' Society, where she served on the board, as camp chairman and on the service committee; and the Easter Seals Society, where she served on the rehabilitation and service committee. A member of the Indiana State Nurses Association, she served as a delegate to the convention and received a Citation for Public Health Work. From 1954-1987, she was a member of the Tri-County Nurses Association, which later became District 15 of the ISNA. She was a charter board member and served as a board member, officer and on the Intergroup Relations Institute. She was a charter board member of the Fulton Co. Council for Handicapped Children. She assisted with Red Cross Home Nursing classes. A member of the Fulton Co. Historical Society and the Fulton Co. Genealogy Society, she received a certificate of appreciation from the historical society.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Wilson and husband David, Omaha, Neb.; two grandsons, Scott Ferguson Wilson, Omaha, Neb., and Daren Cole Wilson and wife Margi, Leawood, Kan.; three great-grandchildren, Ellie, Cole and Mary Grace Wilson, Leawood, Kan.; one sister-in-law, Catherine Brubaker, Rochester; and one cousin, Ada Chloe Fisher, Richland Township, near Rochester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Arthur and Claude Brubaker Jr.; and one sister, Evelyn Pyle.
Her funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Foster & Good Funeral Home, 128 W. Sixth St., Rochester, with Pastor Buck Padilla officiating. Burial will be at IOOF Cemetery, Rochester. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today and one hour prior to her service on Tuesday.
