Ellis C. Huggins, Sr., 62, for nearly half a century one of Nashville's most prominent and best known citizens, died at his hoime, 2007 Terrace Place, at 7 o'clock this morning.
Mr. Huggins had been in poor health for the past three years, his illness forcing him to retire from active business. For the past year he had been confined to his home.
Mr. Huggins was born at Manchester 62 years ago, and when a small boy moved to Nashville with his parents. He was educated in the public schools of Nashville, and his first business experience was as a traveling salesman for Orr, Scoggins & Co., which later became Orr, Hume & Co.
For twenty-five years he served the same firm and covered the same territory.
ORGANIZES NEW FIRM.
In January, 1911, he became one of the organizers of the Hermitage Hardware Company at 309 Third avenue, north, and was actively associated with this firm until 1925, whe the business was acquired by Keith-Simmons & Co.
He was also financially interested in other enterprises in connection with the hardware business, and was associated with the Brannan-Huggins Motor Company of 1223 Broadway at the time of his death.
He married Miss Lena Tate in Lynnville, Tenn., in 1897*, and three sons were born to this union: Tate, Will S. and Ellis C. Huggins, Jr., all of whom live in Nashville and survive him.
Early in his life he joined the Presbyterian church at Lynnville and served as ruling elder for many years making many sacrifices to carry on his work for the church. In Nashville he attended the First Presbyterian church.
Mr. Huggins was a man of great intellect and a close student of human nature. He was conservative and a wise counselor, his judgment being sought and followed by others who wished to benefit by his wide experience and knowledge. His estimate of men was always based on their honesty and integrity rather than upon their material wealth.
Of an extremely charitable nature, Mr. Huggins was ever willing to extend a helping hand to the needy and distressed. He was devoted to his family and friends, and no sacrifices was considered too great for him to make for others. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Belle Meade County Club.
