AJ York was a UNION SOLDIER. He enlisted in Company G, Indiana 99th Infantry Regiment on 20 Aug 1862. He mustered out of the military on 15 Jun 1865.

Between enlistment and mustering out, Pvt York was involved in the Battle of Vicksburg on May 1863, Battle of Chattanooga in November of 1863, Battle of Atlanta in July 1864, Battle of Resaca in May 1864, Battle of Ezra in 1864. Finally he was captured at Cave Springs, GA along with Thomas Rodgers, Henry Lindley, and William Bray on October 20, 1864.

Pvt York was sent to Andersonville prison, then Cahaba, aka Morgan's Castle, before being exchanged in Vicksburg in April 1865.

Pvt York was among the troops aboard the SULTANA for his transport North. He boarded the SULTANA in Vicksburg. They went north stopping in Tunica, MS. On 27 April 1865, having left Tunica the SULTANA was traveling north when outside of Memphis, TN when the boilers on the SULTANA exploded. Survivors flooded the hospitals in the Memphis area. York was returned to Soldiers' Hospital in Vicksburg. He was admitted on 29 April 1865 and listed as a survivor of the Sultana Disaster.

On 8 Feb 1869, Pvt York applied for pension and listed his status as INVALID. He is laid to rest at Cedar Hill Cemetery in the HOFFMAN family section. His grave is just inside the gate. Cemetery records state that Mr Louis Hoffman purchased this plot for him.

Grave is within the marked area of the Hoffman family plots. As of 2014 the stone has fallen and is laying flat, but otherwise undamaged.
