Alexander Hamilton Daugherty was the son of Andrew Daugherty and Celia Moad. He married (1st) Jane Grier, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Grier, January 10, 1832, in Georgia. In this same year, Alexander purchased property in Jackson, Georgia. Alexander and Jane had four children: Margaret Emily Daughterty (who married James H. Bryans), Andrew Burns Daugherty (who died unmarried), Elizabeth Jane Daugherty (who married Jeremiah James Sloan), and Mary Ann Daugherty (who married James M. Daugherty). Jane died in 1840 at the age of 30.

Alexander married (2nd) Janes's 1st cousin, Margaret L. Key, May 16, 1841. [Jane Grier's mother, Elizabeth Grier, and Margaret Key's mother, Margaret Grier, were sisters.] Alexander and Margaret had six children: Amanda Luvenia Daugherty (who married James E. Munsey), Laura Campbell Daugherty (who married Harvey Jefferson Sloan), Julia Stephens [Stevens] Daugherty (who married Cornelius Ambrose Weaver), Robert Grier Daugherty (who died young), Virginia Moad Daugherty (who married Levi Shepherd and then Andrew D. Bell), and Belle Key Daugherty (who married Marshall M. Bohon).

Alexander, at least for a time, was a lawyer. In that capacity, he served as justice of the Inferior Court in Jackson, Georgia from February 1833 until October 1837.
