Former Houston Teacher Dies

Mrs. Alva Thurman, sister of W O and Tex Chenault of Houston, and J S Chenault of Okolona, died Sunday night, Jan. 22, at her home in Gulfport following an illness of about a week, and was buried the following Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.

Born in Houston, Mrs. Thurman was a graduate of the Houston High School, and taught here for a number of years.

She was first wed to A L Gilliam, who died in 1920. To that union was born four children, three of whom survive. They are Comilus of New York City, Lt. Jaunita Gilliam of Washington, D C, and Theo Gilliam of Fort Worth, Texas. A fourth child, Edith, is deceased.

In 1926 (sic), she married to Mr. Thurman in Gulfport. To this union was born two children, Miss Betty Sue Thurman, a student at Massachusetts College, and Marion, of Gulfport.

Besides her three brothers, she also leaves two sisters, Lynette of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Miriam Simpson of Atlanta, Ga. Two other sisters, Corraine and Bessie, preceded her in death.
